With great sorrow I have taken notice of the sudden and unexpected death of Anton Geesink. In my life I have had the pleasure to meet him only a few times and every time I felt myself in presence of a great and strong personality with a good sense of humour. I had the peasure to meet Sensei Anton G 3x at the International judocamp at Papendal.
Later on i trained underneat « his wings » at a clinic he was asked to give for the VJF.
I like/loved his personality, his way of approaching judo but for sure his training-endurance and RESPECT!!!!
Judo and Anton geesink are linked for life and judo will miss this great Champion.
He will allways be in my heart/judo-teaching.

A great athlete and gold medallist in judo, Mr. Geesink dedicated his entire career to the promotion of sport values and education of judo. The Judo Family as well the Olympic Family have lost one of the most popular athletes in the world and a great person.

With great sorrow we learned of the death of Anton Geesink, surely one of the most famous judo legends of all time.
From the beginning of my time in judo, I have always heard of Anton Geesink, the first non-Japanese to win a World Championship, first to win Olympic Games against Japanese domination and a leader in so many ways in judo. As an educationalist he showed originality and vision and his ideas have borne fruit in countless ways.
In after years I was privileged to work with Anton Geesink on the IJF Education Commission and to see him in action as a teacher and leader. His originality was an inspiration and his kindness and humour made him a pleasure to know and work with.
We have lost a giant of judo. His work in judo remains and the legend remains, his friends will remember him all their life as a man of humour and fundamental kindness.
I would like to extend sincere condolences from myself and the Oceania Judo Union to his family, and to the members of the Judo Bond Nederland.

Ik ontmoette Anton voor het laatst in Augustus 2009 in Rotterdam, waar hij me onmiddellijk herkende en vriendelijk begroette. Anton was in elk aspect impressionant. Zijn verwezenlijkingen zijn van dergelijke omvang dat we vandaag de dag nog moeilijk in hun totaliteit kunnen vatten hoe uitzonderlijk ze wel waren.
Overal waar Anton kwam of ging, drukte hij blijvend zijn stempel op de herinneringen van de aanwezigen. Toen hij in 1997 door de IJF tot 10de dan werd gepromoveerd, was dat de eerste maal dat zulke eer een Westerling werd betoond. Veel van Antons records werden nooit geëvenaard, en zullen wellicht ook nooit geëvenaard worden. Zijn 21 Europese titels zijn nagenoeg onvoorstelbaar en buiten bereik van zelfs de meest successvolle judoka die hem navolgden.
Anton was eigenwijs, maar nimmer heb ik mijn bewondering voor wat hij heeft bereikt onder stoelen of tafels gestoken, uitzonderlijke verwezenlijkingen die wellicht slechts mogelijk waren dankzij zijn buitengewoon sterke persoonlijkheid. Ofschoon Antons fysieke tegenwoordigheid in het judo-gebeuren in frequentie was afgenomen, is het moeilijk om judo in te denken zonder Anton. Anton was in staat te doen, en deed het ook, datgene waar wij allen slechts in onze wildste judo-dromen over konden fantaseren, want geen van ons had zijn capaciteiten.
Anton probeerde zijn kennis over te brengen zowel via de mat als via zijn talrijke boeken. In zijn pedagogische aanpak was hij vernieuwend lang voor anderen dat probeerden na te volgen. Zo introduceerde hij bijvoorbeeld biomechnisch-wetenschappelijke principes in zijn beschouwingen.
Anton Geesink is onvervangbaar, and met zijn verdwijnen, wordt één van de belangrijkste judo-hoofdstukken afgesloten, voor goed. Ik ben dankbaar, ontzettend dankbaar voor wat Anton ons allen heeft gegeven, iets dat de mens Geesink transcendeerde, iets dat misschien best wordt omschreven als 'hoop', hoop en motivatie voor iedereen om hun eigen levensdoelen te verwezenlijkingen. Meer dan om het even wie bewees Anton Geesink dat niets in het leven onmogelijk is als je er maar hard genoeg voor werkt, en de nodige motivatie en discipline aan de dag legt.
Bij deze wens ik Antons echtgenote, zijn kinderen, en naaste familie die altijd zijn steun en toeverlaat zijn geweest, sterkt in deze moeilijke dagen.

Dinsdagavond ben ik, Kees Stigter uit Wassenaar, naar Utrecht gegaan om de laatste eer te betuigen aan Anton Geesink Anton jr. en 2 dames heb ik gecondoleerd en verteld dat ik 1 van de 11 judoka’s was op het CIOS (Overveen) in 1964. Er waren zeker honderden mensen die in de rij stonden om afscheid van Anton Geesink te nemen. Om de kist stonden 5 judoka’s (hoog gegradueerden) o.a. Joop Gouweleeuw en Tonny Wagenaar.
Geesink San verdient veel respect; hij was geen gemakkelijk mens, maar hij heeft JUDO in Nederland op de kaart gezet. Daarvoor heel veel dank,

Op vrijdag 27 augustus bereikte ons het droevige bericht dat de naamgever van onze judovereniging Anton Geesink is overleden.
De heer Geesink heeft ruim 45 jaar geleden aan de wieg gestaan van onze vereniging. Omdat zijn actieve carrière in die jaren zijn aandacht nog volop opeiste, was hij niet langer in staat om de judolessen in Culemborg te verzorgen. Hij had er inmiddels wel een gezonde voedingsbodem voor de judosport gelegd. Toen twee van zijn oud-pupillen het plan opvatten om een judovereniging op te richten gaf hij hen toestemming om zijn naam te gebruiken. Eind 1965 was judovereniging ‘Anton Geesink’ in Culemborg een feit.
In alle jaren van ons bestaan onderhield de heer Geesink met grote regelmaat contact met ons en wij met hem. Dat heeft geleid tot vele waardevolle en dierbare judomomenten, maar ook tot veel respect van onze kant voor hem.
Wij wensen de familie van de heer Geesink voor de komende tijd alle sterkte toe om dit verlies te verwerken.

Als kleine jongen van 10 volgde ik in 1969 in (of all places) Nigeria mijn eerste judoles. In de expat gemeenschap van Shell aldaar was er een enthousiaste judoka + grote fan van jouw overwinning in Tokio 1964 die een groep kleine knaapjes bij elkaar kreeg om bij 36 graden celsius judo te gaan bedrijven.
Vanaf 1971 tot plm. 1985 kreeg ik les van Koos Bonte die jou goed kende en bij je in het nationale team zat (maar helaas omdat hij toen al 31 oud was in ’64 niet naar Tokio mocht gaan). Koos sprak altijd met ontzag over jou. Zelf ben ik nooit verder gekomen dan recreatief judo, maar door Koos heb ik wel altijd met veel respect jouw carrière gevolgd.
Nu sta je op de eeuwige tatami in de hemel naast sensei Kano. We zullen je nooit vergeten!

Onze innige deelneming bij het heengaan van een groot boeg beeld in de judo historie,ik zal het nooit vergeten toen anton in 1961 in Roermond tijdens de Roermondse judo kampioen schappen een competitiespeciaal draaide tegen 11 bruine banden en binnen de vijf minuten hadden ze alle maal een ippon tegen,bewondering voor deze "grote man" van het Judo.

Nooit zullen wij het bezoek vergeten van Anton Geesink en Minatoya die in 1964 te gast waren in onze club.
Voor een overvolle zaal namen deze beide judoka's het toen op tegen de toenmalige zwarte gordels van Vlaanderen en veegden de mat letterlijk en figuurlijk de mat met hun aan.
Dit zijn zo van die momenten die men in een judoleven nooit vergeet!!

The Austrian Judo Federation is concerned by the passing away of Anton Geesink.
Anton did a lot for the Austrian Judo. First he invited the Austrian Team to trainings in the Netherlands, then the Austrian Federation assumed the methodic of Geesink in the education and graduation system. So the success of Austrian Judo also wears the handwriting of Anton and we have to thank him for his assistance. Because of these good relationship between Anton and Austria he built a home from home in Tirol in the 70th.
The Austrian Judo Federation will always keep Anton Geesink in fond memory.

Het overlijden van Anton Geesink maakt me verdrietig en brengt herinneringen boven. Lang geleden maakte ik voor het eerst kennis met judo in de Kodokan Dojo te Utrecht. Anton gaf daar een cursus gebaseerd op zijn ideeën zoals later beschreven in zijn boek ' Judo, de nieuwe basisleermethode.' Een charismatisch leraar die kundig en met humor de groep sportleraren bespeelde.
Ik condoleer zijn vrouw Jans, zijn kinderen, verdere familie en vriendenkring. Evenals de JBN die een legendarisch lid verloor.
Mr. Anton Geesinks passing makes me sad and brings memories about. Long ago I met judo in his Kodokan Dojo at Utrecht. I was allowed to attend a course based upon his ideas later described in his book 'Judo, the new educational method' ' A revelation performed by a charismatic judoteacher.
I express my deepest sympathy to his wife Jans, his children, family and friends. And to the Dutch Judo Federation loosing a legendary member.

Upon learning the sudden passing of Mr. Anton Geesink, we should like to extend to his wife, his family, Judo Bond Nederland, and citizens of the Netherlands our most sincere sympathy and condolences, on behalf of the Kodokan Judo Institute, All Japan Judo Federation and all of the judo friends in Japan.
Our sorrow gets even deeper for Mr. Geesink who has been known as a great friend of Japan. He is a special person for Japanese people as well.
Especially, his courageous attitude at the 1964 Tokyo Olympics was unforgettable for us. His great achievement shall be handed down to coming generations by the judo family in all over the world.
We highly appreciate his great contribution not only to the International Judo Federation as a member of the IJF Executive Committee, but also to the Olympic Movement as a member of International Olympic Committee.
Today, JUDO is spread to every corner of the earth.
It is no exaggeration to say that his contribution accounts for a very big part of this judo development.
We sincerely hope that the soul of Mr. Anton Geesink will rest in peace and that you will overcome this great sorrow. It is also our hope that you will continue to uphold his ideals by pursuing further development and diffusion of judo.
